We’re taking Ash Wednesday to introduce the series, and then we’ll spend the next five focusing on aspects of our ministry here at Prince of Peace. &lt;br /&gt;o All Mentors need to be Child Safety Trained through Prince of Peace.  If you have not been background checked or trained, please talk to Natalia this morning before you leave to set up a time to meet and get trained. &lt;br /&gt; Even if you have been trained in the past – you must get retrained if it’s been over three years.  &lt;br /&gt;o All mentors are mandatory reporters.  If your mentee tells you something that you think is reportable, you must report it to Natalia.  &lt;br /&gt;• Where?&lt;br /&gt;o Always meet at Prince of Peace.  NO exceptions. &lt;br /&gt;• When?&lt;br /&gt;o This year like last year – we’re asking all mentors and students to mentor on Wednesdays from 6:30-7 and then attend worship together at 7pm. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. &lt;br /&gt; 1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. 2 This is what the ancients were commended for.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Discuss:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. What do you think “goodness” means?  If someone has the fruit of the spirit of goodness, what would they do, say, etc.?&lt;br /&gt;2. The Acts text above describes the early church.  What do you think of the way they acted?  Do you think any churches exist today that still work this way?  Do you think our church looks like that?  Why or why not? If not,  what things could YOU do to make it more like the early church? &lt;br /&gt;3. The Hebrews text is the start of many verses about faith.  Open your Bibles and look at all the times in chapter 11 you see the phrase “by faith.”  Read each of those instances and talk about why you think faith was needed in each situation.  &lt;br /&gt;4. Verses 1 and 2 of Hebrews 11 say that faith is being certain of what we hope for but cannot see.  Based on this definition – what things do you have faith in?  &lt;br /&gt;5. This is our last week of mentoring.  On the first week we talked about which fruits of the spirit would be most difficult for us and which the easiest. James 3:5-8&lt;br /&gt;  1 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.&lt;br /&gt; 25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 26 “In your anger do not sin”[d]: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold. 28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need. 29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.&lt;br /&gt;  5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Discuss: &lt;br /&gt;1. Have you ever heard the phrase “I’m looking out for number one”?   What does it mean? Who is “number one” in this statement? &lt;br /&gt;2. All the verses above have a lot to say about being nice to people.  Our culture says that “nice guys finish last.”  Do you agree or disagree with that statement?  &lt;br /&gt;3. How can you be nice to people without getting walked on?  Is it possible? &lt;br /&gt;4. Many of the verses about talk about how we talk to each other, but especially the verses from James.  Take a minute and re-read the James verses.  What sticks out to you?   &lt;br /&gt;5. James said that many big forest fires have started with only a small spark.  Have you ever said something mean or untrue about someone and had it get out of control?  When? What did you say?  What happened?  Were you able to fix it?  &lt;br /&gt;6. When you think of the word “gentle” what comes to mind?  &lt;br /&gt;7. Who or what do you think most commonly gets treated with gentleness?  Why?  &lt;br /&gt;8. How hard is it to treat mean people kindly and gently? What things do you have a hard time being patient for?  Why? &lt;br /&gt;2. When you think about someone who you would classify as having a lot of patience – who comes to mind? I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. 10 I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. 11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.&lt;br /&gt; 4-5Celebrate God all day, every day. I mean, revel in him! Make it as clear as you can to all you meet that you're on their side, working with them and not against them. Help them see that the Master is about to arrive. He could show up any minute! 6-7Don't fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God's wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It's wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life. 8-9Summing it all up, friends, I'd say you'll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies. 10-13 I'm glad in God, far happier than you would ever guess—happy that you're again showing such strong concern for me. Not that you ever quit praying and thinking about me. You just had no chance to show it. Actually, I don't have a sense of needing anything personally. I've learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances. I'm just as happy with little as with much, with much as with little. I've found the recipe for being happy whether full or hungry, hands full or hands empty. Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Discuss: &lt;br /&gt;1. How do you define joy?  &lt;br /&gt;2. God is love. Mentor training is at 10:00am on Sunday, February 27th.  Please make sure you and your mentor have exchanged contact information and stay in communication as our first week of mentoring nears on Ash Wednesday, March 9th. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mentoring 101&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• What?&lt;br /&gt;o This Lent our theme is “Fruits of the Spirit”.  We’re taking Ash Wednesday to introduce the series, and then we’ll spend the next five focusing on one or two fruits of the spirit a week.  &lt;br /&gt;o All Mentors need to be Child Safety Trained through Prince of Peace. Adults trained in 2009-2010 do not need to be retrained.  Child Safety Training dates will be Wednesday, March 2 at 6:00pm and Sunday, March 6 at 10am. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• Where?&lt;br /&gt;o Always meet at Prince of Peace.  NO exceptions. &lt;br /&gt;• When?&lt;br /&gt;o This year is a little different – we’re asking all mentors and students to mentor on Wednesdays from 6:30-7 and then attend worship together at 7pm. "Who do you say I am?"  Peter answered, "You are the Christ." Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him. He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. "Get behind me, Satan!" he said. "You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men." &lt;br /&gt;• Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus&lt;br /&gt;• Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.&lt;br /&gt;• Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. A lot of what we believe about relational wellness can be summed up by the command to “love God and love others.”  In the second reading, Paul gives us a list of things that come out when we truly love God and love others. When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there. When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. "Where have you laid him?" he asked. "Come and see, Lord," they replied. Jesus wept. Then the Jews said, "See how he loved him!"&lt;br /&gt;•  They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. What does it mean to be emotionally well?  &lt;br /&gt;2. In the first reading above, Jesus arrives after Lazarus has died.  Why do you think Jesus weeps when he hears this news?&lt;br /&gt;3. Jesus shows us that it’s ok to hurt and to weep, but a lot of times the world around us tells us we’re pansy if we cry.  What was the difference for Jesus in this scenario than another one where he encounters death and doesn’t cry?&lt;br /&gt;4. Do you have a place you can go or people you can go to where you can share your real feelings?  Where, and who?&lt;br /&gt;5. Who are your biggest fans? A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but being a short man he could not, because of the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today." So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. All the people saw this and began to mutter, "He has gone to be the guest of a 'sinner.' “But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount." Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. What is the difference between a job and a vocation?  &lt;br /&gt;2. How do you know if you are vocationally “well?”&lt;br /&gt;3. As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, "Jesus, Master, have pity on us!"  14When he saw them, he said, "Go, show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were cleansed.  One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.   Jesus asked, "Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" ALL adults working one on one with students MUST be Child Safety trained, even if you have been trained in the past. Here is some basic information you'll need as we move into this church season. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lent begins with Ash Wednesday - February 17th, and continues through Easter Sunday - April 4th.  Our mentoring program here at POP happens on Wednesday nights from the 17th of February through the 24th of March.  &lt;br /&gt;If you have never mentored before, or have been out of it for awhile, please plan on attending the &lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;Mentoring Meeting on Sunday, February 14th at 10am in the CLC&lt;/span&gt;.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Starting on February 17th, students and mentors may meet between 5:30 and 8pm for a minimum of 30 minutes.  Please plan ahead with your mentor where and when you will meet them each week!  We HIGHLY encourage mentors and students to attend the Lent Services together at 7pm in the Worship Center.  We make these services a little more "youth-friendly" and experiential, and all of the mentor discussion questions are based on the topics covered in the Lent Services. &lt;br /&gt;Each week students and mentors check-in TOGETHER at their "grade" table in the CLC and then go into the church somewhere and talk over the questions provided.  &lt;br /&gt;Our Lent Theme this year is "Wellness," and our topics will be about physical, relational, vocational, emotional and spiritual wellness.  Discussion questions will be provided on this webpage each Monday.  Questions will also be provided in printed form at check-in each week.  &lt;br /&gt;If either the student or mentor cannot make a week, you must make it up. What will you do? &lt;br /&gt;• The came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him.  He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village.   When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”  He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”  Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes.  Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.  &lt;br /&gt;• Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face.  Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. When you imagine what God looks like, what do you see?&lt;br /&gt;2. To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task? Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit.  On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, like men being sent from God. &lt;br /&gt;• Six days before the Passover, Jesus arrived at Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor.  Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.  Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured in on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair.  And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.  But one of the disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor?  It was worth a month’s wages.” He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.  “Leave her alone” Jesus replied “It was intended, that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. She said to herself, “if I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.” Jesus turned and saw her.  “Take heart daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.”  And the woman was healed from that moment.”&lt;br /&gt;• When the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. In the first two readings above, people were healed simply by touching Jesus – it wasn’t Jesus touching them, but them touching Jesus.  What do you think about that?  &lt;/span&gt;We’re taking a week to       introduce the series, and then we’ll spend the next five focusing on one       sense a week.&lt;span style=""&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;It’s going to be       really interesting, and a really great way to reflect on how we       experience God, and how we can experience God more fully – with all our       senses. &lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li class="MsoNormal" style=""&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Abscissa;"&gt;All Mentors need to be Child Safety Trained       through Prince of Peace.&lt;span style=""&gt; font-style: italic;"&gt;congratulations&lt;/span&gt; - one of our junior high students has asked you to be a mentor for the season of Lent!  Our mentoring program here at Prince of Peace is another way we try to connect adults and students as we all walk on the Journey of Faith. &lt;br /&gt;Some basic notes about mentoring:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Coordinate meeting time and location ahead of your first meeting&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Consider eating a meal together at least once during Lent if you can. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Mentors meet one on one with students each week for about 30-45 minutes. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Before meeting, sign in at the students grade table in the CLC&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Questions will be provided online each Monday, and hard copies will be available at each check in table.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Please try to attend the 7pm Lent Services together if possible.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Make up dates will be during Holy week, but extended time (meeting for and hour or 90 minutes) counts as well. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;Our Lenten theme this year is "The Five Senses of Lent" ... questions and services will be based on this theme.  Please take note of the dates below and get them on your calendars as soon as possible!  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;February 19th - Mentor Training, 6:30 PM in the CLC.  This is not required for returning mentors, but new mentors are strongly encouraged to attend. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;February 25th - Ash Wednesday, Mentoring Week 1&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;March 4 - Mentoring Week 2&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;March 11 - Mentoring Week 3&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;March 18 - Mentoring Week 4&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;March 25 - Mentoring Week 5&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;April 1 - Mentoring Week 6&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;April 9 - Maundy Thursday - Mentoring Make Up 1&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;April 10 - Good Friday - Mentoring Make Up 2&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;I think that's it for now!
